City-Port Relationships in Malaga, Spain: Effects of the new port proposals on urban traffic.
Urban Transport Magazine
Traditionally, one of the most significant difficulties of the port-city relationship has been the urban traffic problem, which makes difficult to carry out the port operations and vice versa. The case of Malaga (Spain) is very special since its port for historical reasons is very close to the urban centre. The expansion of the port towards deeper waters and the inherent increasing in the traffic flow has served to exacerbate the previously commented problems.
It has been proposed an ambitious project that will allow the transformation for urban activities of under-used port areas that are adjacent to the city. Taking into account the proximity of urban areas, some of the port areas were necessary for the urban integration just like is picked up in an agreement between the municipal authorities and the port that was written in a development plan revised and modified in 2003. The subsequent transformation of the piers one and two has been very successful. However, in the current urbanization port there is a free space next to the new east wind dam, in which it has been installed a maritime station for cruise ships. Now it is proposed to extend it for 10,000 cruise passengers and create an area for a small marina and other facilities. This proposal also includes the provision of a new hotel with 350 rooms, in a building of the Notable Tower and an aquarium.
To evaluate the pressure of the new mobility flows that will be associated with the provided developments, a traffic and mobility study has been developed, analyzing, simulating, predicting and evaluating the degree of impact generated. We introduce the methodology, results and conclusions of this study as well as the measures and proposals for the sustainable management of the traffic versus the new demands of the expected mobility flows. In conclusion, these flows can be perfectly accommodated by the road network in the new scenarios demonstrating an adequate and satisfactory relationship between the commercial activity of the port and thr urban planning requirments.
