GIS4tech meets with Profith UGR research group to discuss CuidActiva project

On Friday 10th of June, the multidisciplinary team of the CiudActiva project, which aims to encourage the active movement of young people based on urban planning in the cities of Granada, Valencia, Jaén and Almería, and composed of researchers in physical activity and sport Profith UGR, Palma Chillon, architecture, Sergio Campos (founding partner of GIS4tech) and GIS data analysis GIS4tech met at the headquarters of GIS4tech in Granada to study the best way to locate the spaces and times where young people are most active.

Specifically, GIS4tech's contribution will consist of studying, using advanced GIS methodologies, whether the urban environment influences the routes that young people take to get to school.

Collaborating institutions include the University of Granada, Drexel University, Syddansk Universitet - University of Southern Denmark, Universiteit Gent, Universitat de València and Universidad de Extremadura.

The project will be financed by FEDER funds/Junta de Andalucía - Consejería de Transformación Económica, Industria, Conocimiento y Universidades (Reference B-CTS-160-UGR20), and will be led by scientists from the University of Granada, belonging to the Department of Physical and Sports Education and the Department of Urban and Territorial Planning. It will also include the participation of national researchers from the Universities of Jaén and Extremadura, as well as international experts from the universities of Drexel (United States), Ghent (Belgium) and the University of Southern Denmark (Denmark).

To achieve their objectives, the researchers will analyse the physical activity habits of more than 250 Andalusian adolescents and evaluate the urban environment in which they are physically active, both at home and at the schools they attend, as well as along the route between the two sites. This will help to identify those aspects of the urban environment that favour physical activity and, in particular, active travel, i.e. walking and cycling. The final results will be integrated into an informative guide that will include recommendations on the use of existing urban environments and on the redevelopment or creation of new spaces.
